Grounded Anhinga

We came across this anhinga while walking through Wakodahatchee Wetlands last week. I was distressed to see most of the feathers on his wings missing and initially thought that he had a disease or it was a product of age.

I did a little research and found out that the anhinga molts all of his flight feathers at the same time. This renders him flightless for a time, until the new ones grow in. I guess this guy will be grounded for a little while, but he'll be back in the air eventually.

Phew! What a relief!
